This Sunday (April 18) will be a special day for the Friends in Faith class as we welcome a guest speaker to our class via Zoom from Charlottesville, VA. Read below about this very special person.
Rev. Samuel A. Shields, born and raised in Columbus, GA, graduated from Presbyterian College with a degree in Christian Education & Religion, and then graduated from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA with a Masters of Divinity. He now serves as Resident Chaplain of General Medicine and Gerontology at UVA Health System, in Charlottesville, VA. Rev. Shields is an avid coffee drinker and uses this joy while on call at the hospital. As a clinical chaplain he visits with patients, families, and staff, providing pastoral care to them as they manage whatever brings them to the hospital. As a Chaplain, Rev. Shields discusses spiritual and emotional concerns with patients, prays with them, meets their spiritual and religious needs, and cares for those at the end of their life.
On a personal note…the Sharitt family and Sam have been friends since Sam was in the 5th grade. We attended First Presbyterian Church of Columbus, GA together where Sam and our son Harrison (same grade as Sam) were friends. Sam was active in youth group, LOGOS, and Presbytery youth events. He also attended Montreat MIddle School Conference, Montreat High School Conference, and Triennium.
Please join us as Sam shares his knowledge and insights about the chaplaincy profession and aspects of it that have changed in the past 50 years. It has evolved into more than what most us perceive it to be. You will definitely want to be a part of this informative and unique presentation!
The highlighted Zoom link is below. I look forward to seeing each of you this Sunday!
